cat biting (not kitten)

First time cat owner here and i have a question that i've asked a few other people but figured id ask you guys. When i'm playing with or brushing smokey he'll bite me and hold my arm with his front legs. He isn't biting hard enough to break the skin but he's got some pressure going. I just wanted to know if this is normal (which i heard it is) or if i should do something when he bites. I don't mind it but i don't want him to bite other people. Thanks!

Yup, perfectly normal. During brushing or petting cats can become over-stimulated. Keep the brushing sessions shorter. When your cat starts getting bitey, put the brush away and break out the cat toys.

If you need to dislodge your hand from your kitty’s jaws, push back toward her mouth gently. They usually get the idea and let go. Pulling away too quickly can cause injury to yourself or your cat.

Regards,
Brian

Agreed with Brian, except I'd suggest that you want to discourage this behavior for the following reason: your cat needs to know that biting hurts you, which knowledge might be necessary at some time your cat gets spooked or riled up and really bites hard. This topic has come up many times and there's a lot of good advice here about how to stop a cat from biting. I'd suggest using the search function on the keyword "biting."

Yes, my thought, too. Such a typically cat expression. (play on words intentional)
