Rolling in the dirt

Arnold is a 20lb orange male. When he goes outside he rolls around in whatever dirt he can find, the drier and dustier the better. He's a different color when he comes back, and he doesn't mind being hosed off and towel dried.

He doesn't seem to be itching, but he is obsessed with dirt. Any theories?

Thomas LOVES rolling around in the cat litter that spills out of the box. I have no idea why. He's always done this.

I think he's weird. Maybe your cat is weird too.

I think kitties are like chickens, in that they like to take "dust baths". I know the chickens do it for a natural pest control, I'm not sure why kitties do it.
Perhaps they get their 'minerals' from the dust when they groom themselves afterwards.

My cats are indoor kitties, but if they get into the basement or the garage they immediately start rolling around on the floor. Of course the garage floor is usually much dirtier, especially in winter when the car tires are always dragging in sand. They head for the dirtiest spot they can find...weird! I have made a very conscious effort to not allow Holly into the garage, I assume she would do the same thing and figure it would take forever to clean her up with all that fur...

Sam (Bridge kitty) had to give dirt the "sniff test" and the "paw test" before he rolled in it.

My four are the same. As soon as I open the door they all run to the side of the yard that is not grass and roll roll roll. They do change colors

Yup, if you let the kids out in the backyard they all do the stop, drop and roll. Simba will run full speed to his favorite area so that no one else can get there.

Simba is generally the only one that I have to clean the dirt off. The others seem to shake themselves clean. Of course, he's too good to cover his poop, so why should he go to the effort of getting dirt off?

Yup...that's why I don't let Holly out there...she doesn't bother to cover poop or pee. And she does some grooming, but more often than not, makes Kobi do it for her.

Maybe your cat's poppa was a dog?!?

I've heard of cats rolling in the dirt, but combine that with a cat that likes to be hosed off.......I don't know......that's a little too much for mere chance.
