Train cats to go outside to do their business.

This is the opposite from most litterbox questions I have read. What is the best way to train cats to go to the bathroom outdoors after having been trained to use the litterbox? We have 3 cats, 1 that has been an outdoors/indoors cat that does his business outside always and never uses the litterbox, and 2 that are now going outside more often. These 2 are younger and like to come inside to use the litterbox. We want them to go outside now that they are allowed out. Any suggestions? Has anyone gone through this same thing?

Thanks.

Take the cat litter tray outside! Try the soil in the tray trick to give them the hint, but it's a smelly one. Or just give them time most cats get the idea through smelling where other cats have been. I have seven that go outside and they mostly do their stuff outside but I keep a cat litter tray inside for those lazy ones who can't be bothered to go through the cat flap.

When I was a teenager my cats always went outside, and we only had one seldom-used just-in-case litterbox placed near the door. I don't remember how the cats were trained, they just always went out to do their business.
