Hiding under the sofa?

Our neutered male cat, Sec, has a little problem. He's a lovely cat, and wonderful in every other way..except one thing.

He hides under the sofa any time he's in the kitchen.

Just the kitchen..no other room.

Whenever we are in his bedroom with him, he's fine, and will allow us to stroke him and handle him.

But whenever we bring him out into the kitchen, he runs straight under the sofa.
It's not because it's the only available place/time for him to hide, either. There's plenty of hidden places in both rooms mentioned before..but he's not interested in them.

When we first got him he was very very shy and hid under the sofa..is it possible that it's just something that's kept? How can we coax him out witout having to move the sofa every time? We can't keep him in his bedroom!

How long has he been with you? If you've only had him a short time (a week or two), then he's probably just adjusting to the additional territory. Is there a reason you are confining him to the bedrooms? Do you physically bring him into the kitchen from the other rooms? Cats like to explore on their own terms. I would just leave the door from the bedroom open and let him wander around on his own. And don't drag him out from under the sofa, let him come out on his own. Just leave him alone to do things on his own time. You can facilitate by keeping things quiet, just sit on sofa (or on the floor near the sofa) and read. Give him a nice safe environment to get comfortable with.

He's been with us since around August.

He's in his bedroom (where the animals sleep..obviously hence being there bedroom lol.) most of the night, but during the day he comes out and just..hides.

He isn't allowed in the living room due to the leather sofas and his scratching tendencies.

He comes out by himself most of the time, but sometimes we do get him out.

Could it be anyting to do with the other animals? He doesn't have a problem with them anywhere else though...

Thankyou for your reply!
