Litter box troubles

Hi - new poster here. Have two girl cats, 15 years old. Shared one litter box for most of that time but one started defecating outside of the box late last year (thankfully we have wood floors and not carpet).

After trying several remedies, keeping a second box in the room where she offended did the trick. I've tried moving the box downstairs in the basement with the other a few times, and every time she'll stop going for days until I put it back. Once she backed up so badly she threw up and defecated a huge one at the same time. She doesn't even *use* the upstairs box all the time, just having it there seems to do the trick.

Well, it's been a couple months since she violated but she did it again a couple days ago and hasn't gone again since. I fear another violation soon and don't know what to do.

I think she's stressed because we're moving and a lot of the furniture is gone and there are boxes everywhere. I'm also worried because I fear what might happen in the new place.

Any advice?

I suppose I'd advise to be patient with her. And keep an enzymatic cleaner handy.

She is an older cat, established in her patterns, and her life is undergoing a huge upheaval right now. Expect some problems while she adjusts. Perhaps try to keep her contained in an easily cleaned room until the move is complete and you are established at your new home.
Good luck,

Thanks, Heidi. I got up this morning and there were a couple fresh ones in the litter box. Not sure if they were hers or Layla'a - they were in between their respective normal sizes.
