Cat lost friend

I got 2 cats, brother and sister, from a shelter about 6 months ago. They played together well and about 3 months ago I started letting them out for a few ours a day. Rather inevitably one of them has now failed to return, the male, and the female seems rather distraught - she miaows all the time where before they were both fairly silent, and she cowers behind the sofa where before they both lay on the top of the sofa.
My question is, should I try to introduce another cat to the house? What are the chances of them bonding like the brother and sister did?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Cat lost friend

Oh, that's very, very sad....

My Bonnie and Clyde were littermates. Bonnie died at the age of 15 and Clyde was very restless after that, often yoweling night after night. We introduced another cat to the household about 4 months later. Clyde didn't necessarily appreciate having the new kitty in the house, but they co-existed just fine and I do think that it helped him to be less lonely during the days when we were all at school or work.

I'm sorry your little boy kitty hasn't returned home.
