My old cat is up all night!

I have a cat who is almost 18 years old. She has always been a little bit active at night but lately it seems crazy! She is up at 3am and meowing for hours and hours. I finally gave up at 5am this morning and came downstairs and she promptly fell asleep on my lap as I watched TV. Any suggestions? Vet says she is very healthy for her age.

Re: My old cat is up all night!

Cats can become senile just as humans do. When this happens they become confused and will often wander around at night calling out. It sounds like this may be a possibility for your cat.

Re: My old cat is up all night!

My aged Meezer/Tabby "Snowball" would do that between the ages of 19-21. It was like she would walk out of my bedroom and into the hall, then get "lost" and not know where she was. She would howl and yowl in such a mournful, plaintive and pitiful tone...but as soon as I called to her, poked my head around the door and/or went and carried her back into my room, she was very happy and would stop crying. It was like: "Oh! There you are! I thought I was all alone."

Re: My old cat is up all night!

Think of a senior cat like a senior human. They are very similar and it could be just old age and slowing down that may cause your cat to stay up all night and meow all the time. Your cat slept after you came downstairs to her. Maybe your cat is lonely and needs you more due to old age. Have you tried having your cat sleep with you in your bedroom. If you are concerned about the stairs you can get a child proof gate to block the top of the stairs. I always let my cats sleep in my room as I treat them like my babies and they give me comfort and company. I hope this helps.
