cat being a pill

I've had my cat almost 6 months and she's always been perfectly well behaved. I have two fish and used to try to get up on the desk to harass them but within 2 months of coming home I had her totally trained out of bothering the fish. However just this past week she's suddenly misbehaving. It's nothing too serious, just out of character. I keep catching her on the desk with the fish, so I've been closing the door to that room when I go. She's ignoring her toys, shredding papers that are on the ground, keeps zooming back and forth across the apartment and jumping on the chairs with such force that the cushions go flying and the chairs almost fall over. And I also caught her trying to shred a foam mattress pad that I have, and she's been scratching on the furniture occasionally (another thing I trained her out of early on). My first thought was that she's bored, except she's ignoring her toys and what used to be her favorite scratching pad. Then I noticed that she's been sticking her back end up in the air all the time when I pet her, which she does do sometimes anyway. And she's usually pretty talkative, but lately she's been making really pathetic sounding cries when it's not mealtime. Also when she was sitting on my lap lifting her back end like that I noticed she smelled odd there, not like poo, just weird. Could she be in heat? The shelter and the vet thought she was spayed, and she's never acted in heat before in the 5.5 months I've had her, so I don't know why she would be in heat now... This is my first cat and I'm pretty confused about why she's been acting so oddly all of a sudden. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: cat being a pill

One of my girl-kitties will sometimes exhibit signs of heat, and I know she was spayed at about 7-8mo old. Is there a blood test that can be done to test for estrogen amounts that could tell the vet definitively if she has been spayed or not? I think coming into season could be a good guess as to why she has suddenly begun to behave erratically.

I have no idea if there is such a test, though that would make sense. Of course since I wrote this post she's not been acting in heat at all, but she is still misbehaving. Could she just be bored?

Re: cat being a pill

I think that could certainly be a possibility, too. I wish our cats could speak with us so we could understand. It would make things so much easier.
