new agressive behavior

Well my now 8month old kitty went from being lazy to very friendly and cheerful. But in recent weeks shes become insanly hyper (which I don't really mind) and extremely agressive towards me. When we play she bites me really hard and scratches me. I've tried to disipline her: time out in the basement, squirt her with water, etc. Nothing works! How do I get her to be nice again??

Re: new agressive behavior

I've heard that discipline doesn't work on cats.
You must redirect her aggressive behavior with a toy. Time outs or squirting water can, most likely, make a cat more aggressive in the future-but not out of hyperactivity, but because of anger-which is far worse.
She may just want to play with you, so make sure you play with her every day for at least 20 to 30 minutes, if not more. Make sure you play with a toy made for cats, not your hand. You can also use milk rings, plastic straws, pom poms or just a string with a feather attached at the end.
You must be consistent with your playing and redirecting. Good luck!

That's just it thought, even if I'm with her using a toy, she'll ignore that and attack my hand or my feet.

If you use the forum search function and search on the keyword "biting" there's heaps and heaps of great advice on how to deal with your situation; both scratching and biting.

Re: new agressive behavior

Is your kitten an "only cat"? If so, then she is only playing with you like she would with her littermates. It is at this age, when they play fight and wrestle, honing their survival skills of hunting and territory control by fighting. However, when they play with littermates and mother-cats, they learn that their bites/claws HURT, because the victim will 'cry' and also because the victim can/will bite back and it HURTS, so they learn to play more gentle with each other.

Everytime your kitty hurts you, you need to "cry": Ow! Hey! Ouch! Owie, that hurts! ...and stop interacting with her. Re-direct her to other toys she CAN bite and claw, but you need to be patient and consistent in letting her know that behavior is unacceptable with humans, because she can damage us so easily.
