Leash training...

Can you train an indoor cat on a harness/leash? I am getting him used to the harness in the house for a couple hours. Sometimes when I put on the harness, he fights me and takes off the belly part. He is like a magician I guess he doesn't like anything on him, not even his Christmas costume! It sounds ridicules but how would I train him?

Re: Leash training...

Are you using a figure-8 harness or an h-style harness? Those figure-8 harnesses are worthless for cats. They can get out so easily.

Just remember, it's your cat walking you, not you walking your cat.

If you have a food-motivated cat, treats are your best training aid.

Re: Leash training...

Well, the issues is that I try and get him up onto his feet but he just falls over... He doesn't like the harness on him. I am not sure how to train a cat period on a leash or for that matter, walking together with me?

His harness has a circle around his neck and another around his belly. Looks like the one u have.

Re: Leash training...

Does it have a strap connecting the two loops, so it looks like an "H"? Google "cat harness"

Like I said, the cat walks you, you don't walk the cat. If he doesn't want to walk right now, you'll just have to sit there and wait until he does. You could use something to encourage him, though. Treats or cat toys just out of reach will motivate him to get up.

Re: Leash training...

THis is the figure 8 but he seems to be ok but he won't walk or stand. If I don't have it tight enough, he will get out of the belly part but he is fine I guess.

Re: Leash training...

I went on a trip over the weekend and brought my cat with me. When we took him to a rest area, he crouched down to the ground (like he was in the military). We got a lot of interesting comments about a cat on a leash and harness. It's just not too common in Japan but people do walk their cats He was just more scared of too many people and that he knows not to be outside . When I would pick him up, he would place his front paws around me like he was hugging me tightly. Sometime he would cry out but he wanted to go back home, where he knew "his house or his comfort place". Over all, he was a great boy on the trip!

Here are a few pics....

Re: Leash training...

Yeah but the issues is him not being afraid of many people at a time and being outdoors. Princeton is an indoor cat and only knows this.
Thanks for the vids tho!
