Re: I love kitty - but he REALLY loves me (sorry so long)
Welcome, and I wish I had more to offer...
I had a very needy cat. Mister was a very good cat, but he took up thumb-sucking when he was about 12-14 wks old. Sucking MY thumb, that is! I learned to keep my hands away from him and sleep with them covered or I could wake up to him latched onto my thumb. In times of stress, I could give him my thumb and it would calm him down, so it was a neat trick to use at the vet's office.
We lost Mister only days after we moved 3000 miles across the country. He was missing for 29 days. After we were reunited with him and he recovered physically from his lost-time, he became obsessive over me. More than just wanting to suck my thumb, he had to be WITH me; in the same room, follow me all over the house and if I sat down he had to be touching me. He wasn't a loud cat, but the constant touching was driving me mad. Especially at dinner time because he would sit in the chair next to me and lean his body against my arm. I just needed some space. Pushing him down only worked for a short bit and then he was back on me again. Granted, he always "asked" to be with me, he never just jumped up and pushed the issue, but I would have preferred if he weren't so clingy. I had to be considerate about his time when he was missing and how that affected him. He lived for 6 more years after we recovered him and his behavior (needy towards me) never changed or slacked off.
Sometimes we have to reassure them the best we can and just accept the behavior. Your cat is still young and there is a much better chance that he will grow out of this behavior when he grows more mature with age.
