getting adopted shelter cat used to handling
Hi all. I recently adopted a shelter cat, (spayed female, Bombay, 10 months) and she has been here for 18 nights. She had lived all but her kittenhood in the shelter, so I knew that it would take her time to adjust. For about the first two weeks all she did was hide in the cat hut/bed i bought for her, emerging only to eat at night and such. This week she has been coming out of the hut whenever i come in, she purrs when I talk to her and sometimes even when i just sit near her. She even comes out and rolls around and rubs her head on the floor...looking like she wants to be pet. The problem is everytime I do she seems to enjoy it but then she swats at me! Sometimes she lets me pet her longer than others before she does it. She hasnt ever hissed or shown any other aggression, but it is confusing. Is this the same "breaking in" behavior is related to her often running back into her hut "safe zone" and then emerging periodically every few minutes when i move somewhere? Is this normal behavior? And if it is other than telling her "No" and backing away from her attention wise how can I get her not to do it?
