Cat not always using litter box

I have a 15-year-old indoor longhair cat that has had some problems with constipation -- and when she does go she doesn't always use the litter box. She's getting an indoor formula cat food, which has helped a lot (she goes every day now rather than every other). I bring her grass, which she often doesn't eat. Always has access to clean water. Litter box is cleaned every day. Any suggestions?

Maybe it's something about the litter she doesn't like, such as the smell or texture.

Re: Cat not always using litter box

Are you finding an entire dump outside the box or just a piece or two? Wondering if it's getting stuck to her fur and then falling off later. Have you changed litters? The location of the box? The box itself? Anything at all? You might want to try Cat Attract litter. Maybe going is uncomfortable so she associates the pain with box, similar to what happens with cats with urinary tract infections.

I would try giving her canned pumpkin, psyllium, Benefiber, or Slippery Elm over Indoor formula food. Then you have control of the amount of fiber she's getting and can increase if necessary.

Clearly she needs more fiber in her diet... I can try the canned pumpkin.

Another thing is getting more water in her. Dry food leaves a cat 60% short of their required water intake. They drink, but never enough as they have a low thirst drive. Not enough water will lead to hard poop. I suggest adding wet food to her diet, which is so much better for her overall.
