New kitten

hey guys, just got a 7 week old kitten on sunday & having a few issues....he wont drink water/milk out of a sperate bowl only when we pour it on the food, also he's eating the litter from the litter tray ....he does his business in the tray but then starts to play in the tray & eat the litter bits

This is my first kitten so not sure on how common these behaviours are or how to stop them so any suggestions or thoughts would be most welcome

Re: New kitten

First of all, definitely do not give him any milk. Cow's milk is not easily digestible for cats and will give the little guy upset tummy. As far as not drinking, it could probably be lots of things. Cats have very little thirst drive, so it could be normal. Are you feeding him soft food or dry food? It's possible that he's a little young for the dry food, and therefore simply prefers it soggy. I would recommend giving him some quality wet food, in addition to the dry. If he really isn't drinking at all, continue to water his food down a bit so that he stays hydrated, and take him to a vet ASAP (regardless of health concerns, new kittens should always be taken to a vet). As far as the litter-eating habit, I'd try switching to a non-sand type of litter, preferably something non-toxic until he matures a bit.
