New Shelter Cat

Hi-- We adopted our 1 year old shelter cat almost a month ago. He seems to have made lots of progress the past few weeks (going from not leaving the litter box to walking around the house at night after the kids go to bed). But, he will not let us pat him or come near him. I hope he comes around because I am feeling a little deflated.

New Shelter Cat

Just give him more time and don't push. He will come around when he is ready. Sine cats adapt quickly, others meed tine. I adopted my cats 3 months ago and they are still getting used to us. I think it might be taking longer because of kids. Some cats are just scared of them. One of my cats doesn't like my 3yo daughter and always goes upstairs when she is around.

We've had ours for about two months now and one is just starting to warm up to being touched, pet, or held. The other is a total lap cat and it irks us to think the other is getting left out at times. However as anie mentioned, you have to give them time so that they can figure things out for themselves as they get acclimated to their new home.

some take longer than others. He is young so it may not take much longer - or I could be wrong! Was he feral when you adopted him or was he friendly at the shelter? Kids play a huge factor in this too.
Our Abby was 11 when we took her in and it took months before she was comfortable with me touching her. It took a full year before she was absolutely comfortable with belly rubs and cuddling but it was SO worth it. Once they bond with you, you will feel like you have been truly chosen and the wait will be so worth it.

Cat owners' prayer: "Lord help me be the person my cat thinks I am"
