Unhappy Have I ruined my cat family?

Tinker the adult cat just.started getting on really really well with the kittens, Oscar.and Wilson.

Today was kitten castrate day. Everything went well that side of things but I messed up big time on the home front

When I bought the kittens home I just plonked the carrier on the floor and let the kittems out. Straight away Tinker got upset and started really hissing at them.

Ive let him go upstairs to cool off but he is so on edge and not talking to be either.

I didnt think at all about them smelling so different which I know is important to cats.

Have I messed everything up? Will Tinker calm down and is there anything I can do to help?

Tinker got urinary tract crystals when the kittens first came home because he was upset

I feel so bad and stupid

This should blow over in a day or two IMO. Once the kittens start to smell like the house again, it won't be an issue.

So no, I don't think you've ruined your cat family at all. Just let them have some space to cool off and you should be fine before long.

Don't worry, you haven't ruined your cats' chances of having a great relationship. My cats have lived together for years, and there's always a bit of drama whenever someone comes home from the vet's. Incidentally, we do exactly what you did when you brought the kittens home--put the carrier on the floor and open the door. The after-vet drama in my house is mostly on Dante's part, as he has a really good sense of smell and seems much more scent-driven than any of my other cats.

The best way we've found of mediating Dante's aggression when we bring one of the other cats home from the vet's is to pet and rub Dante (particularily around his face, as cats have scent glands on their cheeks) and then immediately do the same to the other cat. After you switch back and forth between the cats (the trouble-maker, and the cat who is arriving home) a couple of times, the cat that was at the vet should smell much more familiar and illicit much less of a reaction from the stay-at-home cat.

In Tinker's case, it might take him a little while to come around, simply because he's only just started to get along with the kittens on a consistant basis. But, Tinker's come to accept the kittens since they became part of the family, and he'll do so again--once they start to smell more like his little brothers and less like the stinky vet.

Ramona & Choco-cat (and foster kitty, Poe).

Take a towel...rub it on the kittens, then on Tinker, then back on the kittens. Put a drop of vanilla extract between the shoulder blades of all 3 of them. It will help make them smell the same (and vanilla is not over powering or offensive to them). It should blow over in a few days if not sooner.

Ive just put clean blankets down on all of their beds and luckly hadnt washed the old ones yet so I rubbed them on the kittens. I let Tinker come back into the family room and did our treat time session like normal where they each wait their turn for treats. Tinker couldnt resist.after he missed his turn 2 times and started taking his treats.

He is now sat on his favourite pad watching the smelly kittens wrestling (not like they just had an op or anything!). No more hissing as yet

Yes. Yes you have ruined them.

Send the kittens to me and I'll make them all better and return them. (But it might take 5-10-15 years.)

All will be ok. Don't worry. After a couple days they will forgive and forget. Best to keep kittens isolated until they are fully healed though.

Marie you make me chuckle!

Marcia, yes I will do. Tinker is still sleeping up stairs with me as their diets are different still (Tinker gets controlled portions, kittens are still free fed). They are only all together when we are up and around

I was going to suggest the same. I rub the towel on all the non vet kitties and especially on my little mentally challenged boy cuz they all dote on him and then wipe down the vet kitty then back again. It helps for 6 of them but never for my bullied girl.
