You aren't doing anything wrong, but it is okay to tell them no if it's not a convenient moment to hold a cat.

But why are they so needy of lap-time all the time? They'll only step down if I (gently but firmly) push them off, they can stay on my lap all day if I let them. I feel I can't move freely anymore. And they give me such a guilt-trip when I push them off, dirty looks and whining and retreating to their corners to sulk and woe-is-me.

They're former strays, adopted as adults, but not so recently anymore - 2, 1.5 and 1 years ago.

I'm afraid I may be doing something wrong to cause this.

My two trade off on my lap since they won't share. I do get up a lot and they have to move. If you can fit three on your lap you are doing well! I find when it is cold they like my lap a little better too. I keep thinking wow I must be sitting around too much.

Some cats just like more attention than others. Sort of sounds like your 3 are making up for lost time.

Let them have their cuddles and snuggles, but if you need to get up and move then get up. They'll deal. They'll learn that there will be more attention to come later.

I had a dog like that: she came from a situation where she had next to no human attention. When I got her she was glued to me and couldn't get enough of it. I gave her attention and cuddles when I could but if I had something else to do I did it and she learned to deal.

Yeah, some cats just like laps.

Maisie would sit on my lap all day if he could, while Zephyr just doesn't have the attention span for being still there. It's just a personality thing.
