Cat pooping outside box suddenly

Hello. My 8 year old female tabby cat uses the Scoopfree Litterbox fine. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment in NYC and the box is in the corner of the living room. This week my cousin is staying over and the last 2 days Elsa (my cat) is pooping on the hardwood floor near the box but still peeing in the box.

Nothing changed in her life except my 14 year old cousin crashing on the living room sofa. Could that be the reason?!

Appreciate any insight. Thanks!

YES. A strange person in the house and close to her litter box. She is leaving the feces in a conspicuous place and uncovered to mark her territory and tell that new person this is HER house.

The behavior should cease once the house quest is gone.

Thanks for the info! Do you think if the box was in a different room she would use it? My parents visit every few months and she poops in the box fine.

I agree, she's marking her territory. I'd add a second box in another room, it might help.
