Cat hissing at her brother after his surgery

My male cat was just in a vet hospital for a few days having his bladder unblocked (for the first time, he's only 3 and a half, poor guy). He's home and doing well now but is on some medications for a few more days.
However, his sister seems to have a problem with him - she keeps hissing and growling when he's near and has swatted at him a couple of times.
They've never really been apart before this and while they've gotten less snuggly over the years they've always been friends.
Is it just because his mouth and face smell weird from the medicine? Will she calm down when he stops taking it? Is there anything I can do to help her be ok? Obviously it stresses him out a little to be hissed at which is now what he needs right now!

This seems to be a common reaction from cats when a housemate returns from the Vet. Many people here have experienced it and hopefully chimed in.
Try a few drops of vanilla rubbed into both of their fur and rub each one down with the same towel to even out the scents. This may help a bit.

Is you boy in a cone?

She likely smells the other animals from the vets office on him. With my previous two boys, they would be back to normal within a few days.

Its normal. Gizmo batted marshall when he came back from his first vet visit.....I calmly told her....no, no....giz...its marshall...hi marshall...how you feeling? And walked over to marshall....to show her its her friend marshall. Then she went over and gave him a good sniffing ha. It took her that day to get over it.

Thanks guys, reassuring to know she'll figure it out in the end! Today she was batting him from a chair and he paid absolutely no attention, ha!
He's not in a cone, but has some pretty stinky liquid medicine I have to get in his mouth every evening.

Poor thing! Yes, he smells weird and the meds may have altered his chemistry too. Can you put him in a safe room where she won't bother him until he is all better?
