Weird Behavior

Hello everyone.

I didn't know where else to ask this question, so I thought I'd join the catforum community and ask you guys. My cat makes this very weird crackling noise and a very weird expression when she see's birds, or gets 'excited'. I managed to snatch a video of her while she was doing it. Link below. Can anyone explain what she's doing? I've been worried that it's something bad.

Hi Tunaman,
Your cat isn't being "weird"!
That's a completely normal cat behaviour, when they see a bird through a window! A lot of cats "chatter" when excited!
So don't worry, you've got a normal cat, and nothing "bad"!!:p

10cats2dogs,

Thank you for clearing this up! I've always thought it wasn't normal. Now that I know the correct term, I searched it on youtube and see plenty other of other cat's do it as well. Thank you so much for the help!

LOL! You're Welcome!
Cat's are definitely "mysterious" creatures, and can throw some great curveballs our way!
That's what makes them sooooo endearing to us!!

This chattering thing while looking at birds or squirrels is interesting. I think it may have to do with it being a signal to a cat friend that "I've found something interesting out of reach". I've never seen any of my cats chatter at mice, snakes or grasshoppers, only birds or squirrels out of their reach, especially higher up. Sometimes cats hunt cooperatively, so maybe it's a signal that they "need help" with catching this prey. I know if I'm fairly near a window and make the chattering sound with my mouth, my cats will come running to look out the window to see what's up.

Some scientists think that they're imitating the prey they're watching, in order to lure the prey into reach. Apparently several species of jungle cat are quite good at it and imitate birds and monkeys!
