cats and gender

When two spayed/neutered cats meet for the first time, do they need to inspect each others' hind quarters to know if the other is male or female?

Is it important to them to establish the gender of the other cat immediately?

Idle curiosity.

Butt sniffing isn't necessarily about determining gender. It telling the sniffing cat all kinds of info about the sniffee...like the status of their health, personality (a cat willing to have his/her butt sniffed is more open to friendship than one who isn't) and it also provides an identifying scent...in humans we identify each other with facial and name recognition...with cats it's more about scent as it can be difficult to tell two black cats apart by looks only.

It always grosses me out to see my two get really close to the other to sniff and then see that lips/tongue smacking after.

I wonder why they need to do this especially when one has just used the litter box? Probably determining their health status? They should know each other quite well by now, lol.

I don't think it is to do with gender - it is the part of the getting to know each other procedure. Several months ago, we lost the "matriach" of our little pride. She was the ultimate mother - assuming that young cats were her kittens. She never failed to check bottoms and ears! Since she died, Sheba has started doing the same which is quite interesting.

My two are kinda funny about bum sniffing. My girl Alkee likes to do it to her half-bro Zuba and mostly it's OK with him, but she does't like it when he does it to her! Yes, sometimes they do that open-mouth dopey-look (the flehmen response it's called) that enables them to be able to smell something better. All cats, even the big ones, like lions do the same thing, and so do horses.

My girls do this every day. I gently redirect their faces while saying "You've met."

Hrm.. Same except it's more like I shove them with my foot (gently) and say "Stop smelling your brother's butt".

LOL! My girls mostly stopped doing it a long time ago.

But so if a female kitty walks up to a male kitty, is there any way for her to identify him as a boy kitty?

Maybe this only matters to us? (or to me, anyway, lol)

Now I wonder if Celia even knows Mr. Casper is a boy. They haven't had much contact other than nose touches.
