Scratching/Climbing Post

Hey CatForum, loving all of the cute kitty pictures on here! Soon I will get a picture of Duck on here, as soon as he stops being so grumpy! When we first got him me and my boyfriend had made a cat scratching post for him out of empty Pringles cans, skipping rope and a big cutting board covered in carpet. Now he is getting bigger and I think needs something else so he will stop wanting to scratch us!

I am looking at getting him a new scratching/climbing post and am stuck on what one to get. Looking online there are so many options depending on the height, material and what there is to climb on. Are there any that come well recommended from users here? I am looking for something of moderate height so that he can climb around and burn up some energy. Thanks for any recommendations everyone, looking forward to seeing what you all have!

Armarkat.com - Cat Furniture, Cat tree, Dog Bed, Cat Bed

I have one that my guy loved for several years, sturdy construction easy to assemble and good materials.

I made this one out of the cardboard inside tube from a carpet roll and 150' of 3/8" sisal rope. It's anchored to the bottom of a shelf and has a "foot" made from scrap plywood. The hardest part was cutting two circles of 3/4" plywood for the inside of the tube to attach a "tongue" and steel angle brackets to. Both ends have the tongue and brackets.
Sandy likes to climb it all the way to the top and get onto the t.v. cabinet that way. Saxon is a bit lazy, he prefers to get to the top of the cabinet by jumping onto various pieces of furniture, and then scratching the very top of the post when he gets up there.

Nuliajuk, I love that you made your own A carpet tube roll would have worked way better for us then Pringles cans.

Dizzys Dad that looks like a really good one, it was in a decent sized box when you got it (as in not difficult to get into the house)?

It came in 2 boxes which made it easier to handle. There is simple assembly involved with easy to read instructions, all that is needed is a hex head screwdriver. He really loved that it was 7 feet high with a VERY sturdy base and the 'cat house' where he spent a lot of time haha. They have many different models but I believe this is the tallest. Your Siamese must spend a lot of time up there plotting Nuliajuk!

I was just looking at these today by Vesper. Their website is:
https://www.catit.com/products/vesper-furniture/
and they're sold on Amazon for reasonable prices. And they have excellent reviews!

NICE WORK, NULIAJUK!!!
I wish I had the ambition to make my own as well. alas, I just took the easy way out and just ordered one from Petco online. needed one a little taller than the ones I already had. it's still only 64" tall, so maybe someday I will borrow a studfinder and drill and put some of those shelves up on the wall for the kitties to leap onto as well.

So I wanted to post a reply on here about a little incident we had with our post. Last weekend we moved house and while moving the post it fell out of the truck and smashed against the highway. This was an incredible inconvenience as quickly getting something in our new town was going to be difficult and Duck was already feeling uneasy about the house when we went over there the day before. I thought to email Vesper and they were amazing. They sent me a replacement post that I paid a small fee for and they even expedited the shipping so it was here in less than 48 hours. Really happy that this is what I went with, best customer service I have had in a long time.

My biggest complaint about most store bought cat trees is the tiny size of the platforms. I'm not ambitious enough to attempt a setup with platforms just yet, but after watching both cats try to cram onto the top platform of our store-bought tree, I'd like to at least replace that part with something big enough for a king-size cat and a regular cat together.
