My cat is afraid of new litter box!

I have a large cat and the other day I decided his extra large litter box was simply not big enough for him to turn around in. I picked up a 30 gallon plastic Steralite storage box, cut a hole in the side and placed it next to his regular box. He refuses to use it! And when I pick him up and place him in it, he seems to panic and immediately jumps out. His old box is 19"x15" with sides about 10" high. The new one is 18"x30" with sides about 14" high. The only other difference is on advice from my Vet I switched to unscented litter in the new box. I've even tried not cleaning the old box hoping he'd prefer to use the clean one, but no go (note: this is why the old one is so dirty! It's not normally like this!!!).
Advice or suggestions, please!

Maybe try putting the old litter-cleaned but still with his scent on it in the new box. Then mixes in the new litter. Also it looks as if he cannot walk thru that opening you made, there is a bit of the lid still on it? That's a lot of change to be introducing a cat so depending on how well he takes changes it may be confusing him. Hope that helps!

yeah, that hole in the new box looks a little funky and difficult to maneuver actually. I'd cut off that top part as well. if you decide to try a new box after this one, though, I recommend just getting one of those black cement mixing tubs at home depot or something. they work great. I have 3 of them! and the smaller one has sides that aren't that high so you shouldn't have to even worry about cutting an opening for him. if he's a big kitty, he should have no problem at all stepping over the side.

and I would not recommend leaving his original one uncleaned, especially if there's no other box for him to use that he likes yet. he might start developing an aversion to using the box properly all together if it's dirty all the time.

putting his used, but clean, litter in the new box is a great idea I think. and maybe put it just a little farther away just to start with. move it closer slowly so he doesn't feel like it's being forced on him.

good luck.
