Tips for Introducing Puppy to My Two Cats

Hello everyone!

My husband and I will be getting an English Cream Golden Retriever puppy in November. We currently have Smudge and Widget, a brother/sister pair of 8-year-old Oriental Shorthair cats (we believe there's some Siamese in them due to their coloring but regardless...). Our cats essentially rule the house! As is typical of their breed they are VERY loud, very friendly, and pretty much afraid of nothing! Which brings me to my question...

About one year ago, we took care of a friend's dog for 1 week while the person was away from vacation. While there were certainly no real issues between the animals, I did notice that Smudge and Widget would repeatedly try to get into his crate (our friend always left the crate open so the dog could go in and out as he pleased so leaving it closed would have been odd for him), corner him while he was eating, constantly want to be in his face, etc. However, when he reciprocated some of this attention, they were NOT pleased. (Hissing, snarling, etc...) While this situation is definitely different than bringing home a new puppy, I just want to know: does anyone have any tips for introducing a puppy to their cats? Particularly cats who don't understand "avoid and go away" AT ALL and would much rather be in the middle of everything...and be irritated about it.

And here are Smudge and Widget for all to see! (Smudge in the front, Widget in the back.)

First of all your cats are Gorgeous!!!
Here's a couple of links that you may find helpful.....just do all the steps, and don't rush it. You eventually want them to enjoy each other's company, so always reward good behavior with treats when they are together. Enjoy your new English Golden puppy.

Here are a couple of websites you may find helpful:

There are other sites to check out, but these will get you on the right track from the beginning.

Have fun and be relaxed!

Hi Smidget,

I don't have any advice for you, as I've never had a dog. Just wanted to say that your kitties are beautiful. Wow, Orientals with tabby markings!
