shedding

I brush my cats every day. As it approaches October, my cats seem to be shedding less. But they live entirely indoors, and here in the south, we've been air conditioning pretty regularly. I thought shedding decreased when it got cold, and not when the calendar said that winter was approaching. It some seasonal biological clock at work here? My cats haven't been exposed to any lower temperatures, but somehow they seem to know that they should be holding on to their fur.

It does seem strange, the shedding schedule! I think you've nailed it with your biological clock idea. Maybe it's the sun and length of daylight? Houseplants can do strange things too: when they get moved from southern to northern hemisphere they may bloom at the wrong season - but it's the time they would have bloomed at home. I'm thinking of Christmas amaryllis.

As for shedding less as winter approaches, it really would be best to prepare in advance. Fur takes time to grow, so the body must plan ahead.

We don't know nearly as much as we think we do!
