cats suddenly fighting

hi! from Canada, found this website while looking for help advice. Ill end up posting it on the general topic afterwards. its a scary moment!

My 3 cats were all cuddling yesderday, happy etc. Now all of sudden they all want to kill eachother. The one male cat tried attacking the other male cat who is older. Hair was on the floor not much but aggressively chased him. So we locked The younger male and the female downstairs but 1 hour later. The younger male chased the female aggressively as well. right now they all sperate from eachother. two days ago There was a mouse the younger male is the play cat. he never caught that mouse we ended up catching it instead. the next day he just sat at spot where the mouse was waiting for to come out.

Im scared right now! I don't know what to do. I think the younger male cat is the causing the problem right now.

It sounds like it might be redirected aggression. Most of the time, it's because they saw a stray cat outside, but the mouse may have led to some sort of competition, frustration, etc. Try putting a little dab of vanilla flavoring on their necks and near their butts and rub it around with a towel (so they all smell alike).

I'm sorry to hear about this scary episode but totally agree with Marie that it sounds like redirected aggression.

Sometimes it just takes a few days and then things will get back to normal.

Another thing you could try in addition to the vanilla is a pheromone diffuser to help calm them.

Let us know whether things improve!

thank you both. So far here's what's been happening. When both cats are in different rooms, Spook comes up to rear's door and scratch's and meows. Sometimes all 3 cats will come up stairs and be near the door. Its been Since Oct 26th they haven't seen each other. We just showed Nibbles and Rear for 1 minute or so, Rear came upwards to nibbles while she was on a cat tower. Both puffy tails. We think we saw hair on back but no aggressive sounds. Maybe its because they haven't seen each other since then which is understandable? Will do Spook and nibbles Tmrw or Spook and Rear. Luckly I know what caused this to happen. It was a mouse, Rear had it in his mouse and we yanked it away from his mouth. Bad mistake. Rear is good at hunting/playing with his toy. We did find a mouse Saturday dead not sure if it was Rear or Nibbles because we didn't pay attention. We do rotate their rooms around. Hopefully that mouse got caught Saturday let out their aggressiveness.

Quick update!

We crack opened the door for Rear and nibbles ( same age, male and female ) no attacking or anything, then we let them both downstairs nose to nose and eating. no aggressiveness but will still split them up and re do same thing again. then we gotta do again with other cat

They have been sleeping together since Monday! No more fighting, What helped was when we switched rooms with all of them every 6hours or whenever you think its time. So they could smell their scents with cat litters staying in the room and not moving it. Rear did catch a mouse since its mouse season D: Hopefully that helped

thanks <3

Hey again it happened again this morning. Out of the bloom, Is it a young cat thing? We had cats before and never happened. Rear/nibbles are 3 and Spook is 8. Once it happens, is it a ongoing thing?

I suspect it's a "young cat thing"....males especially at 2 yrs. they are still trying to sort out their "pecking order", and be domineering. As they mature, the majority of them chill out and aren't instigating fights. So I think it's a "wait and see" of what will happen with your three. Hopefully in a year or two they will be all friendly or in the least be tolerable with each other.
