Cat freaks over broom

My cat doesn't like the broom, if I bring it out he attacks it. He also will attack me too, I mean hissing, growling and draw blood attack me. To where I am afraid of him and can't sweep the floors.
My husband found him when he was 2 weeks old, he is now 5 years old. My husband was able to handle him, unfortunately my husband passed away 8 months ago. Now I am trying to handle it alone.
Otherwise my cat is a sweetheart, always giving me kisses and wanting to cuddle.
Can anyone help me out on what to do, cause I've tried everything I can think of?

Um, put him in another room BEFORE you break out the broom?

I've tried that, even played radio so he didn't hear it. Somehow he still figures out I pulled the broom out.
