Litterbox issues

I recently adopted a two year old cat. I brought him a covered litter box. It is big enough for him he is only 8 lbs. He did his business in the litter box no problem for 3 days. Now he poops/pees right on the edge of the entrance/exit/edge of box. I clean the box twice a day so im not sure what the problem is. Anyone have any ideas?

Have you taken him to the vet? He could have a UTI. Cats associate the pain with the litter box since that's when it hurts, so they'll avoid it.

Another possibility- some cats don't like covered litter boxes. He was probably trying to use the box but didn't want to go inside, so he used the edge. He probably decided it wasn’t worth the effort and just started using the area just outside the box.
