Whether to get another cat when one dies is always a dilemma and there are no sure guarantees that two strange cats will get along well. Often if the personalities are somewhat similar (altho two bullies would likely be combative), there is a better chance that they will become friendly. If they both were well socialized by being kept with their litter mates from birth to 3 mos., they'll have learned to read cat body language and learned to control their claws and bite.
Another option is a different kind of pet such as a dog with similar personality, or a rabbit (can be trained or is already trained to use a litter box). Rabbits can be playful and are amusing and some are very cuddly. Some people say rats make good pets and are very intelligent---not for me, but it's a personal choice. Good luck!
