I'm just a jealous guy

Do cats get jealous of new animals? I've been fostering a mother cat and her five kittens for the past month (they are four weeks old today!), and for the most part, they all stay in the bedroom and connecting bathroom until we go to sleep at night, then they are moved to the bathroom until morning.

Well, my eight-month-old kitten is restless most of the night and starts waking us up by clawing and biting our feet and hands. If I ignore him, I find him staring under the bathroom door and whimpering. This is a cat that up until a month ago was the sweetest animal, sleeping in bed every night under the covers and waking you up by licking your face. Now he gets into the cabinets, tears open bags of human food (pasta, chips, crackers, etc.), jumps on the counters and in the sink, and is just being bad all the time.

I've been associating this bad behavior with the new kitties, which we don't plan to keep any of them, but how do I make him stop? Will he permanently have middle child syndrome?

Oh yes. They will. Your cat also may want to be friends with the fosters.
He has been smelling them for the past month and be interested in what is going on. Have you thought about letting them get together?

I let the mother come out sometimes to play because she gets bored and needs a break from her kittens, but I haven't let the kittens out because they are so little (although they have tried to run out!). I think my cat is really curious about the babies -- I just don't know how he will react to them if I put them together. He's interacted with the mother a little bit, but she's acted aggressive toward him, so I haven't kept them together for very long time periods. I guess I'm just worried this bad streak will continue forever...
