Can cats have nightmares?

I've noticed a few times that Vequi may be sleeping peacefully, then all of a sudden, she would shake and scream a bit and wake up. Is this normal? I wonder if she is having nightmares when that happens?

I've never heard this happening during the night - she sleeps with me; always during some of her daytime/evening naps.

Ginza's had nightmares, after his last surgery, and for 2 weeks afterwards. He'd be sleeping, then he'd twitch, and cry out, and jolt awake, looking very panicked. Luckily he likes sleeping by me wherever I am, so he saw me right away. Then he looked so relieved, ran over to me, cried a little, and settled in my lap.

All Mammals have a cerebral cortex, so it stands to reason that all mammals can dream. From there, one can assume that cats have nightmares.

I've always wondered what a good cat dream is about. Killing things, perhaps? My cat probably dreams about sleeping.

Occasionally she'll twitch and make noises. I always wonder if she's having a good dream or a bad dream. Is she calling for food or asking for help? Is she chasing or running?

It's also fun to mess with a cat's dream by putting a treat in front of their nose and watch their reaction when they suddenly wake up.
