What do you think of this food?

They are all eating wet now, but I want to have something on hand in case I have to be away for most of the day.

Heathwise Chicken Meal % Rice cat & kitten food by Nutura Pet. It isn't too pricey at 6.69 for a 4lb bag. I don't like the fish it it though. Maybe someone else can recommend a dry that won't bankrupt me. Thanks!!

Chicken Meal, Ground Brown Rice, Chicken, Chicken Fat, Herring Meal, Flaxseed Meal, Oatmeal/Rolled Oats, Rice, Corn Gluten Meal, Herring Oil, Natural Flavors, Avocado Oil, Egg, Dried Kelp, Taurine, Vitamins/Minerals

Guaranteed Analysis %:
Crude Protein (min) 32
Crude Fat (min) 20
Moisture (max) 10
Crude Fiber (max) 4

Re: What do you think of this food?

For a "now and then" kind of food it'd be alright but it has corn gluten meal which is just nasty, nasty stuff. IMO it's one of the cheaper decent foods. I get a 5 pound bag of California Natural for $11.49. Chicken Soup is pretty cheap and does not have the corn gluten, I'm not sure if it's as cheap as Healthwise though. But like I said, if it's just as a meal for when you are not around and is not their regular diet I'll say it's fine.

Re: What do you think of this food?

There are a lot of foods out there that are much worse than this one. And it's actually a really excellent food for the price. This food is in the same price range as foods like Friskies & Meow Mix, but where those are nothing but ground corn, by-products and soy, this has some really decent ingredients. The corn gluten meal is the worse of the ingredients. And while I'm also not fond of the fish in it, the reality is that the vast majority of dry foods include some fish (I have a cat that's allergic, so it's something I'm very in tune with). I would bet that finding a food without fish, in the price range you're talking will be darn near impossible.

So I'd say that if this is the price range you're limited to, this is probably the best food you can get.

I don't know if this would help or is a good idea, but I saw this tip where if goign to be away for a period of time to freeze the second meal of 'wet' food, then it will thaw some time later and the kittehs can eat it.

One of my greedier cats would probably eat it frozen anyway.

Re: What do you think of this food?

hehe good point. It would also make it much easier for the enterprising kitteh to carry off the entire frozen chunk for storage behind the couch for example.
