Small white worms?

The community cat, whose picture I've posted before -- I was told -- has small white worms coming off the behind. I saw the cat today, but didn't see any worms. What pill should I get (possibly in liquid form since it's not that easy to handle... or I'll just grind it into wet cat food)? It had its shots just about three months ago, so I wasn't exactly planning to go to a vet, unless it's a big emergency. Thanks.

Re: Small white worms?

Just call your vet and say your cat has tapeworms; you saw the segments on his back end; the medication to kill tapeworms is not expensive.

But you'll also have to get something to prevent fleas or this will be an ongoing problem...

Re: Small white worms?

I ground the tape-worm pill into powder and mixed it with wet cat food. But the cat just leaked a little bit of it. So, first pill is lost, and they are quite expensive from over-the-counter. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Re: Small white worms?

Those tapeworm tabs have a strong taste and it doesn't work too well to mix them into food, because the cat can tell there's something in the food. Search on "pilling" -- there's a lot of discussion on ways to give a pill to a cat.

Maybe pill pockets would work?

Re: Small white worms?

When my cat was suspected of having a tapeworm, the vet recommended Drontal. The tablet was large, and the vet tech administered it by holding the cat's mouth closed, forcing him to swallow it. It wasn't pleasant for the cat, but it worked.

Breaking the tablet into smaller pieces, or grinding it into powder might affect the way the medication works. I would ask the vet before trying that.

Re: Small white worms?

If the pilling doesnt work, just take him to the vet.

jack had gotten fleas as an outdoor cat and developed worms from it. A shot at the vet and a few days later he was just fine.
