Dry food is not appropriate for cats with kidney issues. They don't drink nearly enough water to compensate for the amount of dry matter in the food so they become somewhat dehydrated which is bad for a cat with kidney issues. A cats system is designed for a diet composed of 70% water, 30% dry matter. To achieve that ratio a cat must drink ~1.25 cups of water for every cup of dry food, and it's very unlikely that a cat will drink that much water. I would avoid dry food completely.
