I thought my cat was loosing weight

Well I was so happy when I switched Tessie to Wellness Core about 1 1/2 months ago. I have been portioning her meals 1/4 cup dry in the morning and 3oz can at night (before she was free feed on dry). I weighed her a couple weeks ago and it said she lost 1/2 a pound which is great, but then I went to weight her this morning and she gained 1lb. I guess I did not weigh her right the first time. You can also tell she has put on more weight.
I don't know what to do. I do not want to switch her to all wet becuase she enjoys the dry, I like giving the variety an all wet diet is to expensive. I was wondering if I should just put her back on the regular Wellness Indoor and portion that too see if it helps.

Re: I thought my cat was loosing weight

I feed my cats Innova Evo dry, which is comparable to Wellness Core, in the morning and a raw meat meal at night. Evo and Core are both very high protein, high fat, high calorie foods which must be strictly portioned in order to avoid the sort of weight gain you are seeing in your cat.

My cats, who range in size from 9.5-16.5 lbs, each get only 1/8 c. of Evo a day for breakfast. You are feeding twice that amount of Core to your cat, so I'm not surprised you're seeing weight gain. Reduce the Core portion and continue to weigh your cat every 2 weeks so that you can adjust her food portions as necessary to promote slow, steady weight loss until you get your cat down to her ideal weight. If cutting her Core portion in half doesn't do the trick, then you'll have to reduce her canned food meal, as well.

Wow, 1/8 of a cup. I hope she isn't going to be hungry.
I will try that and see what happens, thanks for the advice

Re: I thought my cat was loosing weight

As I was reading your post, my first though was "cut the Core in half", so Laurie and I are in agreement.

My cats get 3.67 oz wet and 1/8 cup BG dry a day for maintenance so if you want weight loss you need to be below that (of course every cat is different, but it's a good starting point). I suspect you're going to need to go even lower.

How are you weighing your cat? If it's by holding her when you weigh yourself and then subtract your weight, you're going to get a lot of variability....I suggest you invest in a baby scale. You can get one on Amazon for about $60-70.

I weigh her with my scale at home. It's my digital scale but she is a good cat and will just sit on it for me so I can weigh her.

Re: I thought my cat was loosing weight

If you're using a digital HUMAN ADULT weight scale, it's probably only weighing to the nearest half pound, and that's not going to give you an accurate weight on something as small as a cat. If you want an accurate weight for your cat, do as doodlebug suggested and buy a digital baby scale from eBay or amazon.com.

Re: I thought my cat was loosing weight

years ago I bought a step on digital scale that registers by 0.2lbs
I simply weigh myself holding the cat, then again without the cat,
and the difference is the cat's own weight; that's accurate enough.
If your digital scale registers by 0.5lbs - that may not be useful.

don't be surprised by the low food amounts you read here.
biased food packages recommend double, sometimes triple
what you should feed your cat. I have a pair of 7lb cats,
and they do just fine on 3oz each per day of dry alone.
I invested in an accurate automatic feeder which fills
their bowl 0.75oz every 3 hours, 8 times per 24 hours.
It works out well for us, and they are not begging for
food, or waiting by the food dish waiting for a meal,
or bother me while I'm eating my own human food.
half the time they do bolt for the dish when they hear
the feeder go off, other times they just nap through it.

Re: I thought my cat was loosing weight

My scale at home goes by .1lbs (it was expensive but works great).

Well I talked to me vet last night and he said I could bring her into the office If I want to weigh her. So I'm going to start doing that every 2 weeks so I don't have to spend all that money on a scale.

Thanks for all the help!
