Raw eggs?

Is it safe to feed an egg once a week? My dad does it with his dog (the vet ok'd it) for a nice glossy coat...was wondering about kitties?

Re: Raw eggs?

It's preferable to cook the eggs. I think it would be all right occasionally, though.

I think raw eggs are fine, although I don't know if a cat would eat them unless they are used to that texture.

Re: Raw eggs?

When I make up a batch of raw one of the ingredients is raw egg yolks. Raw feeding experts recommend NOT feeding raw egg whites because it depletes the body of something that I can't think of right off the top. One a week won't hurt, though. If you're thinking of salmonella, that's not a problem for cats (or dogs, I take it).

If your objective is a glossy coat, get those eggs with "Omega-3"

Whites contain avidin which binds to the b vitamin biotin. This doesn't allow biotin to be adsorbed. If whites were feed over a period of time then it could lead to biotin deficiency.

But like coaster said, once a week should be okay. The omega 3's are in the yolks.

Re: Raw eggs?

Just a quick update...Monty LOVES egg yolk so he now gets one once a week. In fact he loves it that much that he growls at me when I try and pet him if he's eating it
