Can you suggest a senior diet.

My cat Kobie was just diagnosed with renal insufficiency and I'm reluctant to put him on the kidney diet just yet. My vet and I came to a compromise of putting him on a senior food with lower protein, so I'm looking for suggestions of a good quality senior food. He currently eats Wellness. They don't have a canned senior formula. Thanks for your help.

Re: Can you suggest a senior diet.

You know, I don't know as I've ever seen a canned senior food. You're probably going to have to compare labels. Another alternative might be to 'thin down' canned food by adding some good carbs. You'll have to do some research about that though.

Re: Can you suggest a senior diet.

The following links offer nutritional comparisons of a number of different canned cat foods. The two most critical elements for a cat in renal failure are phosphorous content and protein content. There is much debate about whether or not it is advisable to limit protein for a cat in early stage renal failure, but there is no debate concerning the value or importance of reducing dietary phosphorous. You'd do well to read through the charts on these pages and choose foods with as low a phosphorous content as possible.

Re: Can you suggest a senior diet.

Thanks for the links. That was very helpful. Sorted by the phosphorus level and everything. Looks like Wysong is our next best bet, anyone ever fed Wysong before? Any input?

Edited to say, just saw the felidae link, and that looks even better. If the numbers are crunched the same way, then the phos levels in the felidae are comparable to the kidney diets. Thanks everyone! You guys rock!
