Need help with Low Thrombocyte Count & Constipation

Hi everyone,

It's me yet again. After bringing Snowy to the vet last last Tuesday, he was looking really good. He ate a lot, wanders about more, doesn't cry when I pick him up anymore, starts to knead me again and just look more happy and cheerful. But things start to go down again last Tuesday. He is back to sleeping more again, doesn't wander about much anymore, eats a bit less and just seems depressed. But because he was still eating and peeing fine, I just let him be coz the people around me were telling me that I am being way too paranoid when it comes to Snowy.

However, he barely touched his food last night and he refused to eat anything at all this morning. He started making this wierd cry again when I try to pick him up. So I brought him to the vet asap and requested to get a bloodwork done this time.

Everything came out good in the results (all are well within the normal range) EXCEPT for his thrombocyte count. The normal range is 300 to 800 (at least that is what my vet says) but Snowy registers a low 191. The vet said it is really weird since Snowy hasn't been in any accident or lose any blood recently. She said it might be a condition he was born with. But she gave me this supplement called Transfer Factor and said to try giving it to Snowy for a month and then see whether his thrombocyte count will increase or not.

During the examination, the vet also said that Snowy's back seemed to have healed perfectly but he still seemed to be having constipation problem. She found a bit of blood in his stools too. So she recommeded me to try feeding Snowy Royal Canine's Gastrointestinal Dry Food.

Now here is my questions.

1) The vet likes to prescribe some transfer factor for Snowy everytime he fell sick and I do notice that it helps to make him feel better. But will giving him this everyday really helps to boost his immune system? Is there anything else I can do to increase his Thrombocyte count? The vet also said that Snowy's low thrombocyte count is the reason why he gets sick so easily...is this true?

2) I was a bit skepitcal of buying the Royal Canine Gastrointestinal Dry Food at first but I read a lot of rave reviews about it on websites like petsmart and Amazon. It does seem to help cats with constipation problem a lot. But my vet told me to JUST feed Snowy this. As in no wet food. But I always thought wet food is better than dry food so I am really confused. Should I completely stop feeding Snowy his wet food? He gets two servings of wet food a day now (wellness and holistic select).

Any thoughts and advice would be highly appreciated! Thank you very much!

What were his other CBC results (RBC, Hemoglobin, etc.), especially the total WBC?

Send a message via Skype™ to laurief
Please also post the lab's reference ranges for each blood value. Those reference ranges vary from lab to lab, so we need to see them in order to put Snowy's blood values into proper perspective. Here's an example of how you should post them:

BUN 14 (13-36)
PHOS 6.3 (2.7-7.3)

Hi Christine!
I haven't seen Laurie back yet...
We've got a holiday here, that gives a lot of people three days off...
I'm sure she'll check back in on this for you!
Give Snowy some PetPets for me!
Hang in There,
(((HUGS)))

Thank you Sharon for always caring about Snowy. I am feeling rather depressed right now.

Snowy finally pooped this morning...but the stools were rather hard. I can’t see any blood on the stools but there were blood on the hair near his behind

I am really at a loss what to do. I tried to make him eat the Royal Canine GI food but I guess I need to make the transition gradually coz he still doesn't want to eat too many of it. He is also not really touching his EVO. The only thing he wants to eat is his wet food so I gave him some Holistic Select Chicken canned food this morning even though my vet told me to stop feeding him the wet food in the meantime.

He still seems very lethargic. Hates it and cries whenever I try to hold him to feed him the Transfer Factor and Yakult (my vet told me to give him this to help him with his constipation).
I hate the fact that I really don't know what else to do to ease his pain. Every time I bring him to the vet, they always say there is nothing seriously wrong with him. I think I brought him to the vet like 7 times already this year, I hate living in this country with no cat-savvy vet. I hate living in this country where I can't even find good food and supplements for my cat.

I just feel like I am such a bad owner. I try to do everything I can for Snowy but he still keeps falling sick. People around me all say I am being paranoid, but I just know it when Snowy is not behaving like his usual self. I really hope the Transfer Factor will help and my poor baby will recover soon

Christine,
You are not a bad owner! You've been trying so hard to help this little guy...Snowy is so lucky, to have found you!
It has to be so frustrating for you, when people, who don't care, as much as you do, make such comments

If you've still got that other cat laxative/hair ball stuff, go ahead, and give Snowy some...
The blood you see by his anus, is from the tissue just inside of it, especially if its bright red...
(((HUGS))) and Healing prayers for Snowy,
Sharon

I am by no means an expert...but if the cat wants to eat wet....and eats it....let Snowy eat wet. Dry food dries up things inside,,,imho
