Spay and neuter programs

I've heard that in the big cities, they've got great spay and neuter programs, both for pets and strays.

Strays are TNRed and people can have their cat spayed or neutered affordably and quickly.

How can make something like that happen in this area, we need programs like this!

Hi Kurt!
I just picked up a flyer from one of our shelters, they're advertising cat neuters for. $25.00, and cat spays for $45.00!
Dog neuters run $70.00-$111.00, and dog spays run $70.00-$123.00...
Major savings from general vet charges!
Sure hoping more people take advantage of this here!

On the other end of the spectrum, for the strays and ferals... Merry (Mitts & Tess or however you spell her forum handle) has been active in this movement, where urban animal control officers do active TNR instead of the same traditional method of capture resulting in low percentage adoption or high percentage euthanasia.

I think one of the main things is to just spread the word among your friends at the shelter and your neighbors so that the voice grows and eventually maybe the city government will listen.

Here's what the subsidized spay-neuter program application form in my city looks like:

At some point, it was decided that subsidizing spaying and neutering was cheaper in the long run than having a shelter crammed to the rafters with puppies and kittens every year. It's amazing that many people still won't take advantage of it.

I don't live in a big city (probably in most places I would be regarded as a redneck) but there are groups here that do free spay and neuter for ferals and very cheap ops for rescues - but there is also a major charity that will but an animal to sleep far too easily so a lot does depend on who is running the programme. Might a petition help.

Someone else had the same idea! Spay and Nueter programs are popping up all over the place in this area. I had no idea...
