Teeth andG gum Issues

Emily, our DSH, is going to be four in a couple of months. Last week she started twitching her head as if something was caught in her teeth. This persisted for a couple of days, so I took her to our vet to have her checked out.
Our vet told us that Emily had some gum issues and recommended teeth cleaning with x rays. Two months ago Emily had her annual exam and the same vet had not seen anything abnormal with her teeth at that time.

I am wondering if gum disease is that common with a four year old cat. Emily still has problems eating her dry food, but can eat pate without any apparent discomfort.

I have Emily scheduled for her teeth cleaning and x rays next week.

Gum issues beyond just plaque build-up? It might just depend on genes...

But at 4, maybe it's about time for a cleaning. I think my girls had two, maybe three, in 13 years. Celia had pretty serious tartar once, and you could see that her gums were red, but she was fine after the cleanings.
