Kitten food

Whenever I visit the vet, I get asked if Mochi is being fed kitten food, emphasizing how important it is to look for the 'kitten formula' when I buy her food. None of my wet food specifically says for kitten only (it's all stages food) but I don't want to end up getting into a conversation with the vet to justify what I feed my cat. Neither am I impressed by all the Science Diet displayed all over the place - so I simply replied 'yes, she gets high protein, low carbohydrate and grain-free food'. And they never pressed further.

I'm sure the vet meant well. But I am confused by their fixation on feeding 'kitten food' - why is it that important to them? Is it a sales tactic or is there something more that I'm not aware of.

I've also always wondered whether it was a sales gimmick. Since there are several high quality food manufacturers that don't make a kitten-specific food (like you said, just all-stages food), I can't imagine that it's really necessary as long as the kitten is getting good food, and enough of it.

The vast majority of people going into a vets office are feeding grocery store brands. The adult versions of those foods do not provide enough nutrients for a growing kitten. So you really have to feed kitten food when using those brands.
