Fleas !!!

My 18 year old cat has fleas. He NEVER goes out and I have used Advantage II which did a good job controlling the fleas UNTIL the last 2 months.

I combed him today and got 14 fleas off of him !! Is their a product out there that will do a better job than Advantage ? I'm having the carpets cleaned as well.

Thanks

Give him a Capstar (it's an over the counter pill) and it will kill all the adult fleas on him immediately. In addition to the carpet you will need to treat all cloth surfaces (couch, bed etc.) that he goes on. And crevices in hard flooring, like between the boards in hardwood as eggs can live in the areas for a year or more.

I would use a Seresto collar instead of a spot on treatment. Fleas are becoming immune to the chemicals in Advantage and Frontline. I use Seresto on my dog and it works great. When you use spot on treatments you provide a huge dose at the beginning, but by the end of the month it's effectiveness is dwindling. With Seresto, the medication is delivered in a continuous low dose. The collar last 8 months. Make sure it's fairly tight on the neck, the medication is absorbed via skin oils. And don't take it off (I had a customer taking it off every night and then complaining that it wasn't working).

Oh I feel for you Vettecor...

A few years ago, I took in a stray, who promptly gave fleas to my two kitties. I used Capstar, as doodlebug suggested, to get rid of the immediate fleas. Then I used Revolution, which one of my kitties had an adverse reaction to, even though it's considered extremely safe.

It took weeks of constant vaccuming to get rid of all of the fleas, but for weeks afterwards, I was convinced that they were still around. I called the exterminator in February. She thought I was out of my mind, lol. The mere thought or mention of fleas makes me itchy. Ugh.

Do make sure to vacuum very thoroughly, along baseboards, by windowsills, and every upholstered surface, on every inch of couch, using a crevice tool and brush, and wash anything that's washable, including curtains (or vacuum, especially along the bottoms).

Once I was pretty sure that the fleas were gone, I dusted some diatomaceous earth into kitty beds, the loveseat, and the living room area rug, as those were the places where my kitties spent the most time. Left that all for 24 hours then vacuumed it up.

I hope never ever to have to deal with those nasty little things again.
