help...bleeding queen

Hi,
I'm currently fostering a mama cat and her 6 babies. The mama was a (once tame) stray before she had her kittens yesterday or the day before outside someone's door. All the kittens and the mama appear to be in reasonably good health but i'm a little concerned about the mama cat bleeding. I checked various websites and they all say something about 'discharge' being normal after a cat gives birth, but not if it's smelly. That end sure doesn't smell very good (but then she's also adjusting to new food - i just read the posts about farting cats) but it's not terrible so I'm wondering if a few drips and smears here and there of either bright red liquid or dark brown goop is what's considered normal discharge? I really don't want to disrupt her any more than is really necessary (i.e. take her to the vet for nothing) because we are still working on the trust issue and getting her used to being inside and with people again but then again i don't want to miss it if something is actually wrong.
Thanks,
fiona

I would get her to a vet to be checked out ASAP. It's better safe than sorry, this could be nothing to worry about, but it could also be life threatening if she has a retained kitten or placenta which could give her a nasty infection.

It seems like it has pretty much stopped now, although i'm definitely keeping a close eye on her. She's not showing any signs of illness/infection as far as i can tell (but of course it's sometimes hard to tell with a foster cat because you don't know what they are usually like). Anyway, I figure it makes sense, she did give birth to six kittens not so long ago...
Thanks though emma_pen,
fiona
