Use of back legs

I don't know if I dreamed this, but I think I've heard of a disease that cats can get that affects their back legs. My friend has a little cat who has been sickly and weak since she rescued him 2 years ago. He's been test and retested for all the bad diseases and they are all negative. However, he's always ill. Now he has this condition that affects his back legs. He'll be walking and all of a sudden he'll lose use of them and he colapses. He eats real well, climbs the scratching post and acts like he feels fine. The vet thinks he may have hurt himself, but isn't sure. She didn't take any tests.

Do any of you have any ideas on what this could possibly be?

Thanks for your input.

The first thing that springs to mind would be a pelvic or spinal injury, as all the nerves responsible for back leg movement are in that area.

I would think the vet should take ex-rays. As Emma said it could be spinal or pelvic and an ex-ray could show that. It also could be neurological which would be a little harder to diagnose. But either way it sounds like a few tests would be in orer.
