Vaccine Question- Mom and kittens

I am fostering a mom and kittens. I was told by another foster that you can not vaccinate a nursing mother or kittens. I have never been told that by the vet, but will ask. I was planning on vaccinating them all when the kittens are six weeks, but I would like them to continue nursing until 8 weeks. Is it safe to vaccinate while nursing or should I wait? What do you do? Thanks for your help.

I think the first vaccines are given around 12 weeks, so by that time they're long weaned. Any special reason you want to do it that early?

Sorry I can't answer the question except with another question....I don't recall it ever coming up before.

I found this kitten vaccination schedule.

http://www.kittencare.com/askKC_Vaccines.html

If you follow this schedule, your kittens will be already weaned and you won't have to worry about it.

Actually, new info is showing that vaccines given too early can damage a developing immune system so they should not be given before 8 wks. Before that they are being protected by their mothers system while nursing. So I would wait 'till they're a little older.

Thanks for the replies. I will wait until they are 8weeks. I have no problem with waiting. It's just the foster group (who pays the vet bills) starts them at 6weeks. Would it hurt them to get vaccinated while still nursing? I plan to have them weaned at 8wks to get the mom spayed.

According to the info I just read (sorry I can't find it!) yes, it can damage their immune system if they are vaccinated while they are still nursing. While they are nursing they are getting immunity from their mother. The theory is (which, it appears, has been proven now) if you vaccinate during this time it "confuses" their developing immune system and can damage it.
There was also a thread here last month in Health and Nutrition that gave all the latest findings in vaccines and the new recommendations for scheduling them schedules. You may want to do a search 'cause it ad a lot of good info. and may be helpful.
