Which race should I pick?

First of all, I'm new here, so hello!

So, I'm in the process of buying an apartment, where I'm allowed to have a pet. Due to this, it's about time I get a cat

Firstly, a bit about me:
I'm a 28 year old single guy.
I work 9 hours or so a day, so it has to be able to stay at home alone.
I'm a very mellow guy, so I'd prefer a cat that's somewhat the same.

Things I'm looking for in a cat:
Has to be able to stay at home, and only indoors.
Very relaxed cat, I don't mind keeping it active with play, but generally a docile cat.
Very human friendly and social, since what I enjoy most is sitting with the cat in my lap and having it lie with me when I'm on my computer.

Think thats its... Oh, and id like it to be long hair, or medium. Since I like kinda like the look

I realize that 2 cats would be best, so they can keep each other company, but for a first time owner (Apart from when I lived at home), I dont think 2 cats would be wise for me.

What I've mainly looked at is a Ragdoll, or perhaps a Ragamuffin?

Thanks in advance!

Got to a shelter and tell them.what you want. Look around and see which one you bond with. While PB cats are great shelters are full of cats that may fit your need!

Ragdoll and Ragamuffin are vry social cats. IMO they would be terribly lonely alone that long each day.

I suggest heading to the shelter and giving them your requirements. They'll introduce you to cats that will fit your needs and you can choose one you 'click' with.

I would ask to see adult cats that must be "only" cats first. Those are sometimes the hardest to rehome because so many people are adding cats to their household.

I wish you lived here, I have 3 cats at the shelter that would be perfect!!! Adults, laid back, sweet dispositions - happy to sit in a window during the day and snooze with you at night. Loving and sweet.

If you are planning on buying from a breeder - best wishes. Not all Ragdolls or Ragamuffins will fit the list of your requirements. Each cat has his/her own disposition so there are no guarantees.

If you are willing to adopt from a shelter then there are literally tens of thousands if not millions of cats that fit your requirements - plus you get to save a life. Call your local shelters and ask to speak to an experienced shelter worker/volunteer that is very familiar with the in house cats they have. I've learned very quickly that not everyone at the shelter knows cats. Good luck in your search. Looking forward to seeing who selects you.

Do you have animal shelters or adoption centers in Denmark?

The best way to get to know a cat's individual personality (as opposed to the generalized personality traits of an entire breed) is to visit a shelter that allows adoptions.

For your situation, I would definitely recommend an adult cat (not a kitten) who is laidback (even lazy) but loving and loyal. These traits can be found in short hair, long hair, orange, calico, black tuxedo, male, female, and of course in many breeds.

If you don't have the ability to adopt in your country and want to purchase a purebred cat, I still recommend an adult. Make sure the breeder has a good reputation and communicate with them thoroughly.

I did purposely sidestep the initial question because I'm a believer in adopting from shelters. However, there are members on here who are former and current breeders themselves so they will have insight in terms of which breed may have what you want.

EDIT: And LOL at Marcia, I didn't see your post until I posted mine. I originally had written that I can think of 20 cats at my shelter who would be perfect.

Hahaha you need a marshall . On marshalls cage it said...quiet, laid back docile boy.....and he is. They described him PERFECTLY...I might call him a bit boring...even gizmo would agree with that statement. he likes to snuggle at night.

Ask the shelter people!!! They will know who fits your requirements. It may not be the breed you want...but saving a life is what its about...breed doesn't matter

Sadly we dont have animal shelters in Denmark I believe.

Generally here, if noone wants them, they are put to sleep.

It seems like you all generally agree that I should find an adult cat, which might be possible, but hard...
