Why I have my rabies shots

I'm sure there are a few people out there wondering about the comment I have in my signature.

In the summer of 2004, I had just finished high school and I was working a summer job while awaiting college to start. One day I decided to go out and grab some lunch. While on my way to get lunch I saw a kitten in the middle of a busy intersection being passed over by cars. I pulled over to the side of the road and picked up the kiten. The poor little thing was in complete shock and was covered in pee. I got a box out of the trunk of my car and put the kitten in it. After a few minutes the kitten started coming around and began to hiss and spit at me (he was apparently feral) I tried to close the box over him but he bit my hand and ran up under the dashboard. Once I got back to work, I tried to get a few co-workers to help me get the kitten out of my car and boxed back up but the kitty got away. Because of that, we didn't know if the cat was rabid or not so I had to go to the ER and get rabies shots to make sure that I didn't get rabies. Now one of my favorite things to say is "Don't worry, I don't bite. Even if I did I have my rabies shots!" This has also lead to people telling me that I should go deal with any wild animals that get too close to human civilization. "You go take care of the racoon in the hay loft, you have your rabies shots!"

Sounds like fun huh?

Um, hey, I was just wondering... See, I've got this possum coming around, and ...*you've* got your rabies shot and-all, so ... uuummm. Wanna help me out? I'll stand back (to give you room) and hold the phone and have dialed '9' and '1' with my finger hovering over the '1' and ready to send at any moment. Okay?

Would the shot still be in your system since you had the shot in 2004?

Re: Why I have my rabies shots

For humans it is kinda like getting a Tentus shot. The first round consists of 4 shots (one in each arm and leg) and then I got 3 more shots at 1 month intervals. If I got bitten by an animal that was rabid or we couldn't tell if it was rabid or not all I would need to do is get one booster shot instead of the 7 separate shots and that is just a precautionary measure. I think, from what I've read, that the human vaccine is pretty effective for 10 years.

Re: Why I have my rabies shots

Thank you for telling your story, I was wondering about your signature.

I had heard that people who got rabies shots had to get them in the stomach. I guess thats just an old wives tale and for your sake I am so glad to be WRONG!!!

Re: Why I have my rabies shots

People did get shots in the stomach, but not for quite a while now.

Here's an article from the Center for Disease Control:

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/do ... rabies.pdf

"A person who is exposed and has never been vaccinated against rabies should get 4 doses of rabies vaccine - one dose right away, and additional doses on the 3rd, 7th, and 14th days. They should also get another shot called Rabies Immune Globulin at the same time as the first dose."

This is also the information I found on other sites. All shots were given in the arm, on four separate occasions. I guess things have changed since 2004, too.
