Whats a Kotatsu?

I got a couple of PM's, and replies in my "weirdest things" post, asking what my Kotatsu is. Since several people where interested, I decided to post a "reassembled" picture now that I'm all done with the cleaning.

This is my Kotatsu. The cats have just finished dinner and are headed under the Kotatsu because the little heater underneath is on, and it's nice and toasty under there

They especially love the seating pillows

That's Japanese, I take it? And what do you use it for, Mike?

Oh, pretty much everything Taking meals, having coffee, paying bills, keyboard and mouse are too the Vista computer on the rack you can barely see to the right. It's also equipped with plugs for the laptop's power supply, sits right in front of the HDTV, under the air conditoner, yada yada. When it's cold, you can sit there with in a heavy robe with the futon over your legs, and the heat will come up the robe and keep you warm all over.

They were rune stones. They actually didn't have anything to do with the Kotatsu, they were swiped from a nearby shelf by a cat looking for toys.

I saw the coffee pot, but no cup. Do you just drink straight from the pot .

What kind of heater is under there? Is there a fire risk with all that fabric so close by?

The cup was with me at the time

It's a small 800 watt radiant heater thats attached to the bottom of the table. There is a screen about 4 times larger than the heater surrounding it to keep fabrics and kitties away, but I still only have it on when I am right there beside it.
