Home Made Cat Tree

well, Hubs and I are pretty handy, so we prefer to make a lot of stuff rather than buy it when it is an option.

For our anniversary, we decided on adding 2 more cats to the house (we are both very much so Cat People). One of them will be a Bengal. For about a month now, we have been "Bengalizing" the house, reading up on them, and deciding what we can do to make the house more suitable for a Bengal, as energetic and intelligent as they are.

Pared down my collection of houseplants to a select fer that will live mostly in one room the cats do not have access to (reptile room), and changed the doorknob for that room from a lever to a knob with a lock to prevent smart cats from gaining entry.

One of the things we wanted to do was add a cat tree. And do it ourselves, so we could make one that fit our house, specifically. We decided on a location, bought some carpet remnants pretty cheap, and some round wood platforms, and a few rolls of sisal. All of it cost about $40.

We will also be adding a hammock/canopy thingy, that will result in a cat walkway extending from the stairs, across the living room ceiling, to the cat tower, making a kitty highway. For now though, here is the cat tower. We ran out of Sisal, and have to buy a few more rolls. Will be carpeting one of the timbers, and putting sisal on the other (pictured)

We've been thinking of making our own cat tree for some time now! Thank you for the inspiration. You've done a great job so far! I'm sure it'll be great when it's finished.

Nice tree, amazon sells sisal in bulk but you might not need that much at this point

That is a a good looking tree. My cats would kill for something like that.

It was all very cheap, and hubs says the hardest part was cutting the logs so that they would result in level platforms (he considers shims 'cheating').

So far, Dracula (Pictured) gets the most use out of it, but we haven't added the cat canopy yet, so we'll see. We didn't want it to be a 'dead end' where a cat might get trapped/tormented by another cat, hence the walkway we intend to add. As it is now, if someone gets chased up the tree, they will be nicely trapped there, or face a potentially dangerous leap down.

It was all very simple, too. You really just need a screwdriver, and a saw (or someone who can operate one for you) and the raw materials (much cheaper than a cat tree itself, and generally available for cheap or free)

Wow, great tree! (and great model on the tree!)

The post that you have wrapped with sisal looks nice and thick. Is it a log or something else?
