My "new" foster cat room dresser

I decided I needed a larger foster room dresser to store all the blankets I pick up at thrift stores and supplies I need in the room. I started looking in earnest and went to 5 thrift stores, 3 antique shops and just as I was about to give up I hit yet another thrift store and VOILA!! EUREKA!! HURRAH!! I found a nice maple dresser - all solid wood for only $60!! I was THRILLED! I think it was in a flood as the bottom 6 inches looked like the varnish had stripped off.

Two weeks of refinishing it and 5 coats of white paint, some stain and 3 coats of polyurthane and $125 dollars of new hardware later I finished it! What do you think?

I blocked off the underside with plastic strips so tiny babies can't hide under it!

Good job! It sure helps to have decent storage. I wish our thrift shops here sold furniture, but no, only old used clothing.

Nice work, Marcia! Do you want to come refinish my dresser?

DebS, I enjoy doing it - especially the finished product but in all honesty this was nerve wracking! I sanded it and gave it a coat of primer then the first coat of paint before I realized the finish was bleeding through the paint!

I had to totally strip every speck of finish off because it was varnish and stain that was bleeding through not polyurethane! I didn't know what I was dealing with at the time. The strippping and further sanding took days and was so messy I was ready to toss the dresser in the garbage!!

My husand was impatient because my 2-3 day project in his side of the garage ended up taking almost 2 weeks!! I offered my side of the garage but he said no, just finish.

I was glad to be done with it and finally get it in place once and for all. The paint I used was premium paint but is really meant to be sprayed on not brushed on so it's a tad thin so I was constantly watching for runs and drips. I ended up having to put 2 coats of primer on it PLUS 5 coats of top paint. I am quite pleased with it all in all

Wow! That turned out really good. What I have in my cat room is a large bookshelf for my supplies. It works but every once in a while a kitten or two will climb the shelves and disaster ensues, stuff everywhere. I should do something like that.

It looks spectacular! You gave it a totally new look and life with the white paint and dark stain on top. Wish I had even 1 1/100th of the patience and skill necessary to pull that off!

YouTube is amazing for help, spirite! I watched several videos before I started. I'd refinished furniture before but never with varnish on it so this was challenging to say the least. Today I am going to order a glass top for it. Normally they only cost about $30 or so but it will protect the top from kitty paw scratches and my morning coffee!
